Keeping your kids/ students active and engaged during the summer doesn’t just happen by accident! Providing experiences and opportunities for your kids while they are not in school allows them to discover new interests and skills as well as “rule-out” the things that have no interest to them. Either way, it provides new information that could (possibly) propel them to great things.

Here are a few ideas:

  • Sign up for a class. Many cities have free or reasonably priced instructional classes throughout the summer months.  Art, computers, writing, dance, foreign language, etc.
  • Join a gym for exercise classes, swimming, weight training, etc.
  • Volunteer for a charity/ministry/non-profit organization in your city.
  • Visit an Assisted Living facility. Residents love young people and would enjoy their company.
  • Download plans and build something (birdhouse, doghouse, shelf, etc).
  • Go to the library or learning center one time each week.
  • Practice (or create) baking or cooking skills.
  • Identify someone who needs help and “make it happen”. Mow the lawn, wash the car, walk the dog, etc.
  • Take a nightly walk or bike ride with the family
  • Institute a weekly movie night, complete with popcorn and other snacks. Yes…we’re trying to keep things active and engaging and NOT connected to screen time…but creating a fun and safe environment with the family may help create solid bonds with your kids.

Remember, it is our job as the adults in a student’s life to guide and influence. Make plans to connect with your kids every day. If you don’t already, utilize dinner time to sit as a family and talk about the day. Ask questions that require more than a one-word response, and be willing to share about yourself as well. You will be pleasantly surprised at the bond you create with your kids by having a little bit of dedicated time together as a family.
