It’s hard to believe summer is almost over and a new school year is just around the corner. While the start of a new semester can be exciting for some students, it can also bring anxiety and uncertainty for others.
To help make the transition back to routine a little smoother, here are two practical tips:
- Ease into the schedule
Incorporate preparation into the nighttime routine as well. Here are a few things to check together each evening:
- Is your homework, agenda, and any necessary materials packed in your backpack?
- Do I need to sign anything?
- What’s the weather tomorrow, and what clothes should we pick out?
- Let’s set everything by the door so it’s ready in the morning.
Taking time to prepare the night before can prevent those rushed, chaotic mornings that often lead to stress and arguments. And we all know—when the day starts off tense, it tends to stay that way.
- Stay positive and engaged
Help your student build a positive outlook toward school by highlighting the things they might enjoy, even if they’re feeling hesitant. Comments like, “I’m glad you’ll get to see your friends again,” or “Your classroom looks like a fun place to learn,” can help shift the mood.
Make time to help them with homework—even if you don’t know the subject. You may not be a math whiz, but there are likely other areas where you can offer support and encouragement.
And finally, check in regularly. Ask open-ended questions that invite real conversation. Instead of the usual “How was school today?” try asking what they’re learning in a specific class, who they sat with at lunch, or what project they’re excited (or worried) about. BONUS PARENTING POINTS if you do a little research and engage them in what they’re studying!
